What Is IBPS PO? A Simple Explanation

IBPS PO stands for Institute of Banking Personnel Selection Probationary Officer. It is a national-level competitive exam that selects candidates for officer-level positions in India’s public sector banks.

When you join as a Probationary Officer, you go through a 2-year probation period β€” during which you learn all aspects of banking operations. After successful completion, you are confirmed as a Scale I Officer and can rise through the ranks to become Branch Manager, Regional Manager, and higher positions.

The IBPS PO is conducted as a Common Recruitment Process (CRP) β€” meaning you appear for one exam and, based on your score and preferences, get allotted to one of the 11 participating banks anywhere in India.

What Is New in IBPS PO 2026?

Several important changes compared to earlier cycles:

1. Personality Test added A new mandatory (non-qualifying) Personality Test stage has been introduced between Mains and Interview. You must appear for it, but scores do not count toward merit.

2. Digital & Financial Awareness gets more weightage The Mains General Awareness section now gives greater emphasis to digital banking, financial awareness, and fintech topics.

3. RBI Circulars specifically included RBI Circulars and policy updates are now specifically mentioned as part of the General Awareness syllabus β€” prepare RBI monetary policy, circulars, and regulatory updates carefully.

4. AI-based descriptive paper evaluation The descriptive test may now be evaluated by an automated AI scoring system that checks writing proficiency. Focus on grammar, structure, and clarity.

5. Highest vacancies in recent years 6,715 vacancies is one of the largest counts in IBPS PO history β€” and 3 banks (Indian Bank, UCO Bank, Union Bank) are yet to report their final numbers, so total vacancies may increase.
