What Happened?
In a surprising twist of international diplomacy, it was Iran’s consulate in Mumbai that came to India’s defense after US President Donald Trump endorsed remarks calling India a “hellhole.”
Trump reposted a video and comments by conservative commentator Michael Savage on his social media platform, which referred to India and China as “hellholes” while criticising US birthright citizenship laws.
The remarks immediately sparked widespread outrage across India — from government officials to ordinary citizens. But the response that went most viral came from an unexpected source — Iran’s Consulate General in Mumbai.
Iran’s Viral Reply — “Kabhi India Aa Ke Dekho, Phir Bolna”
The Iranian consulate in Mumbai posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Maybe someone should book a one-way cultural detox for Mr. Trump, it might just reduce the random bakwaas. Kabhi India aa ke dekho, phir bolna.”
The post was accompanied by a stunning Maharashtra tourism video — showcasing India’s culture, food, and beauty.
The reply was sharp, witty, and written in colloquial Hindi — making it instantly relatable to Indian audiences. Within hours it became one of the most viral diplomatic posts ever seen on Indian social media.
Hyderabad Consulate Joins the Fun
Not to be outdone, Iran’s Hyderabad Consulate also joined the conversation with its own savage reply:
“China and India are the cradles of civilisation. In fact, the hellhole is where its war-criminal president threatened to decimate the civilisation in Iran.”
The Hyderabad consulate then took the food route — listing the things it loved about Mumbai including chai with bun maska, vada pav, and pav bhaji.
The Mumbai consulate later shared a Rajinikanth meme for good measure — sending Indian Twitter into a frenzy.
Mumbai’s Reply to Trump
The Mumbai consulate summed it up perfectly:
“When your city wakes up to the ocean, has the world, and your street corner alone runs a global food summit? Mumbai doesn’t do ‘either/or’… it does ‘aur kya hai menu mein?'”
Why This Matters for India
This episode has several important implications:
1. India-US Relations Under Strain Trump’s remarks come at a sensitive time when India and the US are negotiating trade tariffs. Such comments from the US President could impact diplomatic ties and trade negotiations between the two countries.
2. India-Iran Relations Highlighted Iran’s strong defence of India signals the growing warmth in India-Iran bilateral relations despite US sanctions pressure. India has significant investments in Iran including the $120 million Chabahar Port stake.
3. Social Media Diplomacy This incident marks a rare and remarkable moment where a foreign consulate used Hindi, memes, and food references to engage in international diplomacy — and won the internet completely.
What Indians Are Saying
The Iranian consulate’s posts received an overwhelming positive response from Indians on social media with thousands of likes, reposts, and comments. Many Indians expressed gratitude toward Iran for standing up for India while criticising the US President’s remarks.
The hashtag #KabhiIndiaAaKeDekho trended across India following the posts.
